Shocking news was released late last night that is sure the change the landscape of Lexington media. It was announced that coveted NBA free-agent Dwyane Wade has agreed to a lucrative deal, not with the Chicago Bulls, but due to a miscommunication with his agent, Wade signed a two-year agreement with Lexington radio moguls 98.1 The Bull. Wade’s agent took to Twitter to explain the mistake. “I let my guard down for two seconds and now, I’ve let my two guard (Wade) down.” Many were shocked by Wade’s move to Lexington radio. Others were simply surprised that Wade would sign with The Bull. Lexington radio insiders with knowledge of the situation said they fully expected Wade to re-sign a deal with 107.9 to remain a member of The Beat.
Even though the signing occurred in error, Wade seems to be committed to helping The Bull get to the top. “This was not an easy decision, but I feel I have made the right choice,” Wade said during his introductory press conference. Other members of the team seem committed to making the move work as well. Officer Don restructured his contract to free up guaranteed money and John McNece has agreed to a reduced role within the station.
Wade’s show debuted this morning on the country station during the morning dribble drive time slot. The show is tentatively named Dwyane’s World, and uses the tagline “Party on Garth… Brooks.” Early reports from the station suggest there was a steep learning curve during the first show. Roughly ten minutes into the show, a call-in request for some songs by The Band Perry led to Wade playing ‘Roar,’ ‘Firework,’ and ‘I Kissed A Girl.’ After another call-in request led to Wade talking at length about his younger days in Miami, when he was able to easily drain buckets from well beyond the Florida Georgia Line, coworkers decided to step in. “We decided we had to do something to help him with this country music lingo. So we all pitched in, and got him a copy of the Keith Urban Dictionary,” fellow on-air personality Andy Woods said.
This move is just the latest in a busy week of radio free agency as stations have been working hard to load up on talent. Wade fills a spot at 98.1 left when DJ Derek Rose was moved over the 94.5 The Mix during a Tradio on your Radio session. Rose said he was hurt by the decision, among other things. The biggest news of radio free agency, though, came when the already loaded 105.5 Lexington Rewind announced the new all 80’s afternoon show hosted by Kevin Duran Durant.
