Officals from WKYT and WLAP are scrambling, this morning, to respond to a scandal some are referring to as “Tailgate”. Newly released body cam footage shows Officer Don Evans doing traffic reports not high above the city in his helicopter, but instead, from the driver’s seat of the car.
“We began to have our suspicions and that’s why we started digging around for the body cam footage,” says Bobby Nealy, the man who first posted the footage to facebook. “The first sign, I guess, was that I could hear his Waze app in the background saying ‘continue straight for one mile’ and ‘expected time in traffic seven minutes.’ You don’t usually run into seven minutes worth of traffic in a helicopter.”
Nealy became even more convinced that Officer Don was not in a helicopter when one morning, he became upset about a very particular back up. During traffic on the ones Officer Don’s report was as follows “You’ll want to avoid heading outbound on Harrodsburg Road as there seems to be some delays out there. And HOLY MOTHER OF GOD (wild honking sounds) GET OFF OF NICHOLASVILLE ROAD MURRAY, USE A FREAKING TURN SIGNAL FOR ONCE IN YOUR PATHETIC LIFE.”
The suspicion was then confirmed when Nealy was able to leak the body cam footage. It was clear from the video that Officer Don was giving a traffic report from the driver’s seat of a 2015 Toyota Camry. The tape showed Officer Don smacking his stomach very quickly with one hand to replicate the sound of a rudder and calling out “I’m high above the city here, looking at everything very clearly now. Looks like a backup on New Circle and I would imagine there is probably some traffic on Nicholasville.”
Officer Don broke his silence Tuesday issuing a statement to the media, “to be honest I only started driving around because they wouldn’t let me land my helicopter at middlefork anymore.”
