As Cloud Computing and Classic Empire battled down the stretch, and Always Dreaming trotted its way into springtime obscurity, many celebrated the real winner of the Preakness, June 10th. Always Dreaming finished The Preakness somewhere that wasn’t first place on Saturday, which allowed the country to collectively exhale and stop caring about horse racing until next May. Now, none of us will have to watch or pretend to care about The Belmont as Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing duke it out for a shot at the less celebrated “double crown.”
A few Lexington residents told us about their relief. “Don’t get me wrong, I love going to Keeneland and the Derby is super huge,” explained local day drinker Jessica Harland, “but when you can’t like see the actual horses walk around the track, or smell them walk around the paddock, then what are we even doing people.”
“We’re from horse country,” said Todd Livingston, a Lexington resident that likes to bet on horses based on their name. “We’re supposed to care about horse racing all the time. But a lot of times it’s exhausting. It’s just a relief that I won’t have to field phone calls and text messages from my friends from out of state asking me my ‘expert’ opinion on a horse race in New York.”
