Last night was opening night for the Kentucky Lawyers Softball League, which means attorneys across the state went from chasing ambulances to chasing fly balls. The game everyone had their eye on though was the showdown between Morgan & Morgan Law offices and Isaacs & Isaacs. The showdown everyone looks forward to every year: John Morgan’s signature high arcing change-up vs the heavy hitter’s big bat.
The game began after local judge Sandra Knight O’Connor threw out the first pitch and the first lawsuit.
Isaacs struggled to open the game after he grounded into a Morgan to Morgan to Morgan double play. Eventually, Isaacs found his stride, hitting a home run but requesting a pinch runner to jog the bases for him.
The game took longer than expected because of multiple delays. The first delay occurred when Morgan & Morgan lead off hitter and former Reds Legend Joe Morgan appeared to tweak his hamstring rounding second and the dugouts emptied as attorneys scrambled to get their business card to the former Red; the chorus of players shouting “have you been hurt in an accident” was deafening. The second delay came after a foul ball hit someone’s windshield in the parking lot, and again the business cards came out. The game picked up a lot more momentum in the fifth inning when umpire and expert witness Dr. Ben Havinpain announced the teams would not be allowed any more commercial breaks between innings.
The game wrapped up around midnight, with Isaacs & Isaacs beating Morgan and Morgan 8-5. The heavy hitter’s two home runs and one double sealed the win. Next weekend the heavy hitter’s bat will face off against the vaunted three-headed pitching attack of Kaufman, Stigger & Hughes.
