Former UK point guard and recent winner of world’s worst haircut, Saul Smith, was recently seen back in Lexington. Saul Smith traveled back to Kentucky to celebrate the marriage of his brother, the former winner of The Voice Jordan Smith. We caught up with Saul during the reception to find out just what he’s been up to since graduating from the University of Kentucky in 2001.
“I’ve been hanging out with my dad coaching some college ball, but my real passion is venture capitalism. I think every day is a search for that next great idea. The next great idea that I’ll have could be right around the corner,” said Smith, currently an assistant basketball coach at the University of Memphis.
“If there’s one thing Saul doesn’t do it’s pass,” he continued in third person. “Saul sees an opportunity and takes his shot, like he did with that restaurant back in 2000.”
Saul Smith has been claiming he created Saul Good Restaurant & Pub since it opened without his involvement in 2008. We contacted the current owners of Saul Good Restaurant & Pub, and they confirmed the only involvement Saul Smith had, was inspiring an apple turnover which was only available briefly, and was widely disliked by patrons.
The son of highly regarded coach Tubby Smith continued to back his claims with very unsubstantiated tales. “You see, I’m Saul and I’m good, and that’s what UK fans always used to yell at me when I walked around campus or when I crushed it during games. ‘Saul Good is what you are, at both basketball and talking to ladies’. If I had a dime for every time I heard that being chanted at a UK basketball game, I’d have way more dimes than I dropped at UK.”
Saul Good Restaurant & Pub is now operating at 3 locations in Lexington, and is known for offering a casual and classy atmosphere, which Saul Smith says is really what he’s all about.
“My whole style is casual and classy, that’s why it’s ‘Saul Good’ man.The restaurant business is like everything else in my life. I came, I Saul, I conquered. That’s why I’m always changing what school I’m an assistant coach for.”
Smith claims he came up with the idea shortly after former UK basketball superstar Kenny “Sky” Walker approached him with his idea for penthouse lounge SkyBar. Smith also claims he was the inspiration for the hit AMC television show Better Call Saul, as well as water Saul-uble vitamins.
